Dec 10,  · Hi guys, Have a Sony TCKs cassette deck for about 10yrs but it's as new and well looked after, heads and rollers clean regularly. Sometimes (for a couple of yrs now) when starting to play a tape the sound goes low and dull intermittently or at times very dull for about a minute or two and then comes back and might continue to do this during 3 or 4 songs.

Nothing on an audio tape will sound right if it's moving too slowly. Even dry dialogue is interrupted by a dragging cassette. The problem is usually in the cassettes, not the cassette player. An audio cassette has to maintain a certain tension on its own spools to move at the correct speed.

The recordings were made on good‑quality stereo cassette decks, some with and some without Dolby, some standard ferric tapes and some chrome‑dioxide. The main problem is that in a lot of the recordings the mics were quite a long way from the performers, so on playback the levels need to be high, making tape hiss quite prominent.
